BRAD HENNING

2005 2ND PLACE WINNER

I WRITE
By Brad Henning

I write for the good of humanity. It's not what you think. If I didn't write, I fear I might become a serial killer or a Republican. When I don't write, I feel anxious. For me, anxiousness tends to breed resentment. Resentment leads to hostility. Hostility leads to, well, you get the picture.

Before I started writing, I had a fairly lucrative career in advertising and public relations. When I ditched it and started back at square one with screenwriting, I soon became hypersensitive to my friends increasingly taking "moderate" political positions to protect their pocketbooks, always with some lame justification about how hard they'd worked for their money. Since the majority of screenwriters never have to worry about wealth, I think my writing (which certainly has not yet made me rich) has helped me stay firmly planted on the left where I'm certain I belong.

Finally, I write because I think "my voice" will help fill a void in film today. (I write scripts primarily aimed at women or gay men over 35.) Or maybe I'm a masochist. But at least, I'm not a serial killer or a Republican.

BRAD HENNIG, born and raised in Pond Scum, Texas, screenwriter Brad Hennig began writing at an early age - mostly letters to his parents in prison.

His first three comedy scripts placed in six national screenwriting competitions, including the Austin Film Festival Screenplay Competition, Final Draft's Big Break Competition (in which he won Second Place in 2002) and the One in Ten Screenplay Competition (in which he won second place in 2005).

EVE WAS FRAMED, Hennig's first script, was recently optioned by Kiki Goshay Productions. His latest script, THE HOT FLASHES, is currently being shopped to producers, with Susan Seidelman (DESPERATELY SEEKING SUSAN, SHE DEVIL) attached to direct.

Brad lives in San Francisco with his partner and dog.
